FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between MDF and solid wood trim? +

MDF (medium-density fiberboard) is the most economical option, takes paint well, and is dimensionally stable. Solid wood is more expensive, can be stained or painted, and reads as higher-quality up close. For paint-grade trim in a typical room, MDF is often the right call. For stained trim or visible end-grain details, solid wood is the better choice.

Can you match existing trim profiles in an older home? +

Yes. We can match most existing profiles by sourcing stock that matches, or for unusual profiles, by having custom trim milled locally. In a 1925 Corvallis craftsman, the wrong profile reads as wrong immediately. We take the time to get it right.

Do you paint the trim, or does a painter handle that? +

Either. We prep the trim for paint as part of the install (caulking, filling nail holes, sanding) and can either prime it ourselves and hand off to a painter, or finish the painting too if the project scope includes it.

How long does crown molding installation take in a typical room? +

A single room of standard crown molding (4 to 6 inches, painted) usually takes 1 to 2 days, including prep, fitting, install, and finish work. Larger rooms, intricate profiles, or stained trim add time.

Will the trim style work in my home? +

That depends on the era and architectural character of the home. We'll walk through your space, talk through what profiles suit the period and the rooms, and show samples before committing. Wrong trim in the wrong house is one of the most common renovation regrets.

Can you do wainscoting, built-ins, and accent walls? +

Yes. Wainscoting (board-and-batten, panel molding, beadboard), built-in shelving, window seats, and accent walls are all part of the trim and finish carpentry scope. We design and install custom pieces that match the existing architecture.
