FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the typical lifespan of a wood deck in Oregon? +

A well-built pressure-treated wood deck in Oregon typically lasts 20 to 30 years with periodic maintenance like cleaning, restaining, and replacing the occasional board. Cedar lasts about the same with similar care. Composite decking pushes that lifespan past 30 years with much less maintenance.

Composite or wood, which do you recommend? +

Depends on the home and the homeowner. Wood is warmer underfoot, looks more natural, and costs less upfront. Composite is lower maintenance, fades less, and costs more upfront but less over the deck's life. For homeowners who like to refinish a deck every few years, wood is great. For those who don't want to think about it, composite wins.

Do I need a permit for a new deck? +

In most cases, yes. Decks above 30 inches off the ground, attached decks, and decks of certain sizes all require permits in Benton, Linn, and Polk counties. We handle the permit process and inspections as part of the project.

Do I need a permit for a fence? +

Fences over 6 feet usually require a permit. Fences under 6 feet often don't, but local rules vary by city and HOA. We'll check the requirements for your specific location before quoting.

How long does deck construction take? +

A standard backyard deck (200 to 400 square feet, ground-level or single elevation) usually takes 1 to 2 weeks from footings to final inspection. Larger decks with multiple levels, custom railings, or built-in features take longer.

Can you replace the decking boards on my existing deck? +

Yes. If the frame and structural members are still solid, replacing just the decking and railings is a cost-effective way to refresh a deck. We inspect the structure first to confirm it's sound before recommending a deck-board-only replacement.

What about pergolas, gazebos, and outdoor structures? +

We build custom pergolas and outdoor structures alongside deck and fence projects. Bring an idea or inspiration photos to the consultation and we'll talk through what fits the space and the climate.
